Design Goals
The REALMS app accompanies the the exhibition experience: giving the visitor a deeper dive into the works, the artist, and events taking place. The logo & branding was inspired by James Jean’s approach to art and the design goal was to place images in the forefront, while also giving the user a streamlined experience of the gallery and event.
James Jean is a Taiwanese American illustrator, known for his commercial and fine art gallery work. His illustrations are described as phantasmagorical, hallucinatory, and fantastical.
Completed in 2018.
Client: University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Department.
Creating A Unique Experience
The initial design began with branding & concepting the exhibition: from naming, logo, colors, and imagery. The mobile app was created to accompany and further the guest's experience from before they walk into the gallery till the end (and beyond)!
James Jean’s approach to art was key in the branding and experience process. Wireframes were created as a rough template for patterns that could be applied to the overall gallery and learning experience.
Bringing it all together
The Realms experience comes together in a high-fidelity mockup. Finding the balance of whimsy and usability, the app utilizes copy and colors in a way that is not overt or sterile. The app brings the user through a simple onboarding and login journey, while showcasing James Jean’s works and events.
